How to do a Emergency Stop.
You may be asked during your test do do a emergency stop, this is not considered as a manoeuvre, you will need to complete it demonstrating full control of the the car and effective observation. Once you have passed your test this will be the procedure you will need to use if it happens for real. The key to emergency stops is prevention i.e. planning ahead, concentrating, good road scanning and being at a suitable speed.
Around 1 in 3 test candidates will be asked to do an Emergency Stop at approximately 30 mph but it is only to be done if it is safe. You will be asked to pull up and stop first and the Examiner will talk you through what they are asking you to do.
1: The Driving Examiner will check behind the car and if it is safe they will say 'STOP' .
2: There is no time to check mirrors (you should all ready know what is behind you) you are stopping your car as if somebody has walked out in front of the car.
3: Firmly apply the foot brake without stamping (firm progressive pressure), if the wheels lock the anti lock brakes will engage, this is normal.
5: Once the foot brake is down depress the clutch, to prevent stalling.
6: Once you have come to a complete stop, firmly apply the handbrake and release the foot brake (Just in case a vehicle behind cannot stop in time)
7: Select first and observe all round the car and drive on if safe (the use of indicators is not necessary).
The driving examiner will inform you that you will not be asked to do this again unless you need to.
